Class Plan for Thursday, May 13th

When you finish with your WAP...... You should read independently and then discuss with a group.

1. Read the Chapter “Beginning” by O’Brien. As you read, highlight those things that remind you of TTTC and underline those pieces of the story that are different (in tone, mood, language, or actual story). When you have all done this (you can read it aloud of as individuals), discuss those pieces of text that you identified. Please answer the following question:
  • What is the tone of this piece and how does it differ from “On the Rainy River.” What led you to this conclusion?

2. Read part TWO of Tim O'Brien's speech given at Brown University: speech
Listen if you can, and you can absolutely read the whole thing (it is EXCELLENT)! After you finish listening, discuss and answer the questions below.
  • What did you find interesting, surprising, or irritating? What is verisimilitude and why is it irrelevant to O’Brien? Do you agree with him about what is “relevant?”
  • Go back to the story, “On the Rainy River”. What are three to five most important lines from this story and why? Please think beyond those facts that are integral to the plot for some of your lines.
